golden romance in the Netherlands

Okee, vertel me eens een verhaaltje.

I didn’t expect to be as taken by Amsterdam as I was, but I don’t know why I didn’t expect to be enchanted: I love flowers, tottering brick buildings, broad boulevards, and water, so in retrospect I was made for this ancient, self-important little canal city. I spent the first week wandering the city and dodging bicycles and buying postcards of every Dutch Master tulip painting I could get my hands on, with occasional trips to the ballet (heavenly) and Viktor and Rolf’s house (their ACTUAL house, omg). Even 400 years after Amsterdam’s turn as the center of the world, it is still the most international of cities, at least food-wise: I ate endless rijstaffel and croissants and paella, all served by people for whom those are native cuisines, ran into people from Winnetka at the Rijksmuseum, and basically haunted the ARTIS compound in the Jewish Quarter. So much inspiration! SO much eating! When we arrived at the W Hotel at 5am for our shoot the photographer was from Italy and the makeup artist was from Curacao, and our model was Dutch, and then there was me: A West African transplant from America. I hope you’ll agree our little United Nations made absolute magic with this styled shoot. If you love the Gelt Bodice+Altgeld Skirt, click on over to see how they can be yours!
