A Voice to build a dream on

“She had] the kind of voice that the ear follows up and down, as if each speech is an arrangement of notes that will never be played again. . . . [T]here was an excitement in her voice that men who had cared for her found difficult to forget: a singing compulsion, a whispered “Listen,” a promise that she had done gay, exciting things just a while since and that there were gay, exciting things hovering in the next hour.” - F Scott Fitzgerald

We were loosely inspired by Chicago’s stock of beautiful Art Deco buildings while planning this shoot, specifically the famous Edgewater Apartments, and of course, the Madonna Della Strada Chapel at Loyola. The new Great Gatsby movie was all over the place while we worked on our mood board, but we wanted to put our own spin on it. This “Daisy” is bit more introspective, more melancholy, but somehow even more charming, and her Jay is the very picture of a besotted admirer in perfect bespoke suit.

Though Fitzgerald’s Daisy was materialistic, shallow, and easily-bored ( the original Manic Pixie Dream Girl), and always expensively-dressed to the Nines, our Daisy’s gowns are both from Mignonette’s Bricolage collection -one-of-a-kind creations made from the studio’s offcuts and stock of vintage fabrics. In fact, her chiffon gown is actually two donated 1930’s dresses reworked and stacked together, and her Battenberg lace gown is - wait for it- two Edwardian tablecloths hand-pieced into a bias cut sheath with popcorn lace for the detailing.
